Like my character bittu in Delhi 6, I too defied my parents and got a tatto on my hip. The tatto was my name, Sonam, written in Chinese language. I don’t believe in getting anyone else’s (Any guy or boyfriend’s) name tattoed on myself. My name means ‘good luck’ and the tattoo has been lucky for me. Mom and dad were fine with it later. I got it done after the release of Saawariya. It looks cool.

Ash and Sonam upset with each other

Although they are a generation apart, it seems Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor (pictured left) are feeling insecure about each other. Apparently, Aishwarya is upset over the fact that Sonam Kapoor will walk the red carpet along with her at the Cannes Film Festival 2009 for the cosmetic giant L’Oreal Paris.

During an event for the brand in Mumbai recently, Sonam spoke about replacing Ash and being the youngest member to join the brand’s bunch of beauties. At the same event, it was announced Sonam will be walking the red carpet in Cannes.

Sources close to Ash, however, have denied this and said Sonam has been signed as a brand ambassador for L’Oreal in India only and she is not the face of the brand internationally. Hence she will not walk the red carpet with Ash. Ash has also reportedly said she finds Sonam’s comments childish while people in Sonam’s camp feel it’s Ash who’s reacting rather immaturely.

Ash’s statements have upset Sonam too as she has a lot of regard for the senior actress. Sonam is also shocked because at the Mumbai event she had praised Ash and said that she would always look up to her when in a difficult situation.

As the Cannes Film Festival is on, it won’t be too long before we find out if Sonam is making an appearance or not.

If she walks the red carpet on May 19, she will indeed be the youngest member to join L’Oreal Paris’ brand ambassadors – actresses Eva Longoria, Elizabeth Banks, Michelle Yeoh and the recent addition, Freida Pinto.

Sonam representing Indian beauty at Cannes Film Festival

After Aishwarya Bachchan, Saawariya and Delhi-6 girl Sonam Kapoor has joined the next Generation of L’Oreal Paris Dream Team. She is now all set to represent Indian beauty and talent overseas at the Cannes Film Festival.

Sonam can’t hide her excitement and states, “I am yet to decide what I shall be wearing for the Cannes Festival. I am depending totally on my designers. Though I am representing the brand, I will also be performing numbers from both the films Saawariya and Delhi-6 for the first time.”

Commenting about Aishwarya Bachchan, Sonam states, “She is the most beautiful woman in the world. Even if I can achieve a part of what she has done I shall feel that I have achieved something. There is no comparison between us as she is undoubtedly an Icon.”

The actress further adds that the youth identify with the brand L'Oreal and she chose the brand because her persona is close to the product.

“I have always chosen quality over quantity. Even my films which I have done represent quality over quantity,” she adds before signing off.

Katrina Kaif Pips Sonam Kapoor to the Post

Katrina Kaif may have been often crticised for her thick British accent, but it seems to have worked in her favour finally. Kaif has bagged a role in Dibakar Banerjee next film, which Sonam Kapoor had her eyes on.

Sonam was extremely keen to work with the Oye Lucky Lucky Oye director and even though she had a reliable line of communication with Dibakar through his favourite leading man Abhay Deol (also the leading man in Sonam's home production Ayesha), she lost the role to Kat.

Apparently, the role in the film, which stars Imran Khan and Abhay Deol, was written with Katrina in mind.
Says a source, "Anil Kapoor was very keen to have his daughter work with Dibakar.

He even called the director home and showed him a show reel prepared for an international project.

The director is also keen to work with Sonam but he sees her as the archetypal Indian beauty. That's not what Dibakar's new Imran-Abhay romance requires."

Dibakar's heroine must be partly firangi, so Katrina with her firangi accent is perfect for the part.

For the film, Katrina would have to mirror her real-life personality. She is of mixed parentage, as is the character she portrays in Dibakar's untitled film.

Says the source, "Katrina approached Dibakar and expressed her desire to work with him.

As luck would have it Katrina is just the leading lady Dibakar was looking for. He really couldn't think of anyone else for the part."

I don’t want to be just Arm Candy: Sonam Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor is all for getting into the commercial groove after doing off-beat films and says she won’t mind playing Lara Dutta’s role in “No Entry” or Priyanka Chopra’s character in “Dostana”. But she is clear that she doesn’t want to be seen as just “arm candy” in song and dance sequences.

“I’m all game for doing movies that are set in commercial parlance,” said Sonam, who is choosing her projects carefully.

“It’s a misconception that after films like ‘Saawariya’ and ‘Delhi-6′, I’m only looking at films with serious overtones. All I look for is meat in my role.”

“See, I have never looked down upon hardcore commercial cinema. It’s just that I never wish to be an arm candy who does four songs, a couple of scenes and then vanishes away from screen. Those are not at all the kind of roles that excite me,” added Sonam, who will be seen in her father Anil Kapoor’s home production titled “Ayesha”.

The 23-year-old may have suffered two box office failures in the “Delhi-6″ and “Saawariya”, but that hasn’t hampered her passion for movies.

“Give me a meaningful role and I will do it even if it is hardcore commercial. Who says Bollywood masala movies do not have good roles for heroines? Look at what Lara Dutta did in ‘No Entry’. Now that’s a kind of role that I certainly don’t mind doing,” she said.

Any other reference points?

“Priyanka Chopra’s role in ‘Dostana’,” she said promptly. “She was so good in the movie and the character was extremely well-written as well.”

Incidentally, Lara had played Anil’s wife in “No Entry” while Sonam’s “Delhi-6″ co-star Abhishek Bachchan was seen with Priyanka in “Dostana”.

No Rules for SRK: Sonam Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor may be just two films old, but she is choosy about her roles and has drafted strict guidelines for herself to sign movies.

The young actress is, however, willing to make exceptions if the man opposite her happens to be Robert De Niro or Shah Rukh Khan.

"Well, why would one actually ask questions if paired opposite Robert De Niro?" asks Sonam with a mischievous smile. "You should consider yourself plain fortunate to just share a common frame with him. In fact, I will be happy to even walk past a frame featuring him. No questions asked. Period."

Sonam teamed up with Ranbir Kapoor in her debut vehicle "Saawariya" and she was seen with Abhishek Bachchan in her second film "Dilli 6". She is now looking forward to a movie with superstar Shah Rukh.

"He is another man for whom I will be so very willing to ignore my rule book. I would be more than happy to go ahead and sign a film if Shah Rukh happens to be my hero," says Sonam, a self-confessed Shah Rukh fan.

"There are exceptions that one makes about the size and content of the role when it comes to working with legendary actors; De Niro and Shah Rukh just fit the bill," she said.

However, when it comes to working on films with anyone lesser, Sonam certainly has her do's and don'ts in place.

"I don't intend to do films where all I am required to do is to dance in four songs and enact a couple of emotional scenes. By no means am I looking at that kind of cinema," she said.

Though the formal announcement of her next film is yet to take place, reports are that Sonam's next will be for her dad's production house. The film is called "Ayesha" and is based on Jane Austen's novel "Emma".

According to industry sources, Sonam will be making a complete about turn from her "Saawariya" and "Delhi 6" image and take on a completely new ultra-chic avtar. The film will feature Abhay Deol along with newcomer Arunodoy Singh, who will soon make his debut with "Sikandar".

Sonam and Imran Khan are meanwhile reportedly being considered by Kunal Kohli for his next film that would be directed by his assistant Danish Aslam. However, confirmation is still awaited around this young love story.

Sonam doesn't want Anil Kapoor to play her Screen dad

Those who want to see Sonam with her dad Anil Kapoor will have to wait for a long time. They are just not inclined to work together.

There's a pivotal role in Anil Kapoor's home production Ayesha (based on Emma) starring Sonam, that he was supposed to play. But Anil, high on the global success of Slumdog Millionaire, is not doing it.

My dad is young

Explains proud daughter Sonam, "Do you really think he looks like my Dad? No! He doesn't. He looks far younger than his age. And that's why I wouldn't want him to play my father. The role in Ayesha that you're mentioning, didn't suit him. My dad can't play the conventional father."

Nahi matlab nahi!

In fact, earlier Anil had been offered a role in Rakeysh Mehra's Delhi-6 with Sonam. Both father and daughter had decided against it. In fact, Sonam was more against the idea of their coming together than Anil.

"And that's how it remains even now," laughs the actress just back from Sri Lanka, after a phoot-shoot for a magazine, "I really feel we wouldn't look like father and daughter on screen.

We'd rather wait a while until I'm older. Because my father isn't going to oblige by looking older."

Age no bar

Point out to her that some of Anil's leading ladies are about her age and she chuckles, "That's right and my father looks very well-matched with all his co-stars.

He's quite something. And now, after Slumdog he has entered another innings in his career. His career keeps getting re-invented. I'm afraid he has set impossible standards for me."

Sonam Kapoor's metamorphosis as a fashion diva came full circle on Saturday night at the Filmfare awards. She became the only Bollywood actress to wear a specially-designed gown by Chanel.

Feel like Cinderella

The ebullient actress could barely contain her excitement. "I just kept staring at the beautiful, basic but simple white gown they sent me.

Yes, I think I'm the first Indian celebrity to be dressed by Chanel in Bollywood. I'm so excited. I felt like Cinderella before the ball. Never before have I been so excited about dressing up for an event."

Apparently, after seeing Sonam's spate of sophisticated magazine covers, Chanel voluntarily decided to send her a gown from their special-celebrity closet.

"That's right. My off-shoulder gown came from their special-celebrity collection," laughs Sonam triumphantly. "They just flew over three Chanel gowns for me to choose from.

I liked the white one. I prefer light shades. And I avoid accessories. They take away from the basic look of your clothes.

And what Chanel sent me for the Filmfare awards certainly needed no enchancement. It was divine, per se."

A lot of designers are comparing Sonam to Penelope Cruz. "It was Sanjay Leela Bhansali who first compared me to her. I think it's a huge compliment.

It isn't as if I'm making a conscious effort to dress fashionably. I wear what I'm comfortable in."

Sonam loves dressing up in light shades and avoids accessories.

Sonam Kapoor goes chic for her dad's next, Ayesha

Devika Bhagat, who wrote the fiercely contemporary Bachna Ae Heseeno as a Ranbir Kapoor vehicle has been roped in by producer-papa Anil Kapoor to give his daughter Sonam Kapoor an ultra-chic image in Ayesha.

Yes it's official. Anil Kapoor's adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma has been rechristened Ayesha in Hindi.

And though the project's official spokespersons would have us believe that "nothing is finalised yet", the Desi Emma is all set to roll in April.

While Abhay Deol has been cast as the man who will secretly love Ayesha until the end, newcomer Arunodoy Singh is the Victorian Casanova whom Emma will chase till kingdom come.

Daddy, for reel?

An interesting bit of casting rumour is of Anil Kapoor playing Sonam's father in the film as well. It's reliably learnt that Anil Kapoor is reluctant to be cast as his daughter's father at a time whem he's playing the lead with the likes of Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif.

The most interesting aspect of the desi version of Emma would be its translocation from 19th century England to the present-day metropolis.

After two back-to-back films (Saawariya and Delhi 6) that required her to romp largely in an ethnic salwar-kameez kind of sartorial grace, Ayesha will finally see Sonam blossom into the diva-avatar that she has so passionately assumed in recent months for magazine covers.

Says a source, "Though Sonam is happy to have been seen mainly as a tradition-bound girl in her first two films, she's itching to break free of the desi good-girl image.

Ayesha will be her first stab at an ultra-chic role."

Interestingly, like Ranbir in Bachna Ae Haseeno, Sonam will have three men played by Abhay Deol, Arunoday Singh and veejay Cyrus Sahukar pursuing her in Ayesha.

Sonam Kapoor reveals her only regret

Sonam Kapoor has become an actor today but she was quite inclined towards academics in her growing up years. In fact one wish that she still has it to become a college graduate. Reason? After Class XII, she discontinued her studies and started concentrating in films.

''I really wanted to study more, especially language'', says Sonam who will soon be seen in Delhi-6 this weekend, ''I have completed my Class XII and though English and Hindi were my favourite subjects, it's a pity that I couldn't pursue them further. I still feel bad that I haven't done my graduation.''

Talking about her love for reading, she also shares an interesting fact about herself. She is not just fascinated with the English language but also loves studying subjects like History and Geography.

''That's true'', confirms Sonam, ''While I had a soft corner for languages, it wasn't possible for me to stay away from History and Geography for long. I always enjoyed my stint with studies during school and for me reading was a lot of fun. What also helped me engage in studies was the fact that I didn't have to do the same things time and over again. I was constantly learning.''

For the moment, it's her brother Harshvardhan Kapoor who is keeping her abreast about the finer techniques of cinema.

''He is currently studying screen writing and I keep calling him and understanding from him the new things that he is learning. Yes, I get to know some good things of screen writing from him but I would always carry the regret of not being able to study things myself. May be some other day, some other time'', concludes Sonam.

Ranbir Kapoor is Sonam's blind friend

How did your dad respond when he saw the promos of your next big screen outing?
He was happy with them. He liked it not because it was my film, but because he felt that it would be a good venture. He felt Abhishek and I share a great onscreen chemistry. In fact, he called up Rakeysh Mehra to congratulate him on the project.

And what according to you, was the best part of shooting for the film?
I got along well not only with Rakeysh but also the rest of the cast. It was great
working with Abhishek. He is cool and young enough for me to relate to. At the same time, he is experienced enough to help me with my acting.

The buzz is that Abhishek and Rakeysh played pranks on you while shooting for the film. What would be the best prank to play on them?
(Laughs) I think it’s time for revenge now.

On a more serious note, Slumdog Millionaire is going places and your latest venture is set to hit theatres. How apprehensive are you of meeting expectations?
I don’t think of expectations as it will only lead to apprehension. I believe in karma. I work for the best and whatever has to happen will happen because I deserve it.

Honestly then, would you keep your fingers crossed for SM to be lucky at the Oscars or a BO hit for your latest?
Both, in fact. I want people to watch my latest film, not because I want it to be a hit, but because it is a noble film, an honest effort. Let me add that I want SM to fare well too.

Isn’t every film an honest effort in that sense?
I have a positive approach to things. Most film-makers make films because they want them to be watched and appreciated. But very few films are made with integrity. Rakeysh’s venture is such that any viewer, from a child to an 80-year-old, will be able to relate to it. ‘

Going back to SM, do you think slamming Slumdog is turning out to be a favourite pastime?
I don’t know. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. That’s what freedom of expression is all about. And if there’s
discussion or debate on a subject, it only makes people think more. Personally though, I loved Slumdog.

Okay, so whose expectations is it more difficult to live up to — your dad’s or the audience’s?
Dad has no expectations from me. He simply asks me to give it my best shot and work hard.

So, when you ink a deal, does it have to do with your dad’s approval?
No, though I do seek his opinion. I’m 23 for God’s sake! For me, it has to be a director with a vision and a great script. The cast will invariably follow.

Following Deepika’s quote then, you had expressed shock on seeing her abs in the item song of her latest film...
I really like Deepika a lot. I have seen her eat. Surprisingly, in spite of that, she manages to flaunt a figure like that.

Did Ranbir call you up once the promos of your latest film came on air?
He loves them. He saw Masakali and called me up. Ranbir can’t see anything wrong in what I do! He’s a blind friend.

How did the Deepika-Sonam friendship catch on?
I didn’t know Deepika too much. She started seeing Ranbir, who’s one of my best friends. We started hanging out together in a group and that’s when we started knowing each other.

Finally, with all the appreciation going in favour of your looks, have you finally come to terms with the fact that you are beautiful?
(Laughs) I don’t know. I’m awkward and I’m not being modest when I say that. I guess it’s genetic. I believe that I’m here because I’m my father’s daughter and because film-makers like Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Rakeysh believe in me. I will only realise how much it has to do with me, once I mature.

When Sonam Gorged on Golgappas

Golgappas, chhole bhature and non-vegetarian delicacies from popular eatery Karim's - star kid Sonam Kapoor gorged on all this and more while shooting for her forthcoming film "Delhi-6" in the capital.

"I'm quite a foodie and have a very Punjabi taste in terms of food. So when we were shooting in Delhi for the film, I used to eat a lot of golgappas, chhole bhature, dahi bhalle and meat from Karim's. Basically, I used to eat all the wrong things, but I loved that," said Sonam.

In Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's "Delhi-6", Sonam plays Bittu, an aspiring singer who lives in a conservative family in the crowded Chandni Chowk area and has a desire to break free from the typical Indian societal norms.

The one-film-old actress says a good amount of preparation went behind her character in the film in which she stars opposite Abhishek Bachchan.

"One has to really prepare for the role he or she is portraying in a film. For 'Delhi-6', I had to work on my accent, body language, clothes, my expressions, the way I walked and a lot of other nitty-gritty stuff," she said.

Apart from Sonam's carefree Indian looks in the film, her performance in the hit peppy number "Masakalli", picturised on her and a dove, has been really appreciated.

"'Masakalli' is a beautiful song by A.R. Rahman and beautifully choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant. Masakalli is the name of the dove in the film and it is very symbolic of my character. She nearly became my pet on the sets. She used to hop on to my head," said Sonam, who is actor Anil Kapoor's daughter.

Asked if she was a wee bit scared of the bird, she said: "I wasn't scared of Masakalli at all. She was just a small bird. How could it harm me?"

The song has become so popular that a lot of Sonam's friends have started calling her 'Masakalli' and she finds it "really sweet".

Talking of her co-star Abhishek, the actress says she had a "fabulous" time shooting with him.

"We share a great chemistry. He is young, but experienced enough and he guided me and helped me through scenes where I would get stuck. Besides, we had great fun on the sets.

"Every 10 days we used to have a dance party when we were shooting in Sambhar in Rajasthan. We used to have a DJ who used to play really bad Hindi songs from the 1980s and 90s and we used to dance all through the night," said Sonam.

Given that her debut film, Saawariya, didn’t turn out the way it should’ve, she must have had to battle some doubts while signing Delhi 6.

But Sonam Kapoor says she went by her instinct. “I liked the role, so I took it up. And of course, it wouldn’t be intelligent on my part not to take my papa’s advice,” she says.

Only two films old, she’s worked with two of the biggest film-makers in B-town, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. “They are different,” says Sonam. “

While Sanjay’s direction is like making an oil painting, Rakeysh works as if on a watercolour.”

With her work, she says, she’s gained in confidence and it’s showing in her ultra hot looks on the ramp and on the covers of glossies. “I believe in myself,” says the actress, who’s gone de-glam and is sporting an ethnic look in Delhi 6. “It’s the character that I play,” she says. “Apart from the clothes by Anamika Khanna and Bharathi Mehra, I also dipped into my mother’s wardrobe and my grandmother’s jewellery collection,” she says.

Sonam’s character in the movie is of a young woman searching for an identity and wanting to break away from social norms. So, we asked her about the attacks on women going to pubs. “It’s a stupid way of looking at women,” she says. “It’s disgusting to see the political games being played. I’m ashamed of the men who spoke adversely about women going to pubs. Indian girls are strong and intelligent and know how to keep their families happy. Women are not inferior to men in anyway,” she asserts.

First it was Sonam vs Deepika, and now it seems the two are best buds. But is Deepika competition? “The thing with competition is that you start concentrating too much on someone else’s career. Competition is unhealthy and one should consider only oneself as the benchmark. You can’t expect two actresses to be the same. Everyone is different. Besides, Deepika and I have made our separate niches in the industry. Our work is not the same,” maintains Sonam.

Adaptations seem to be the flavour of the season. Anil Kapoor is now adapting Jane Austen’s 1815 novel Emma, for his next production.

And who better to play the spirited and busybody matchmaking heroine than his daughter Sonam Kapoor? In earlier versions of the novel, celebrated actresses like Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Beckinsale and Alicia Silverstone have played Emma, whom Austen describes as “a heroine whom no one but myself will much like.”

Emma is one of Sonam’s favorite novels and it is on her urging that papa Anil decided to finally produce a film for his daughter. Says a source, “Sonam can be the perfect Emma. The film will beautifully capture the sensuous and obstinate side to Sonam’s personality."

Revealing more details of Emma, the source adds, “While one of the two heroines is the master of unconventional cinema Abhay Deol, currently being feted for his terrific performance in Dev.D, Sonam’s second hero is newcomer Arunoday Singh. Rajshri Ojha will direct the film.”

Whether Anil’s interpretation of Emma manages to match up to Jane Austen’s novel, and its several celebrated screen adaptations, remains to be seen.
