Meet India’s Angelina Jolie — 22-year-old Delhi model Esha Gupta who is about to make her entry in tinsel town with Hum Aap Aur Pyaar, a romantic comedy set in South Africa that’s being produced by the Desai Brothers.
Esha, a Miss India finalist in 2007, has stormed the fashion and advertising world over the last two years and set ramps afire by walking for established designers like Rohit Bal and JJ Vallaya at the India Fashion Week. She also appeared in some big print and TV ads. But what made Bollywood sit up and take notice of the Delhi beauty is her uncanny resemblance to the gorgeous Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie.
How does Esha feel to be compared to one of the most beautiful and desirable women in the world at a time when she is making her own debut in films? “Everything happened so fast,” revealed Esha. “I never dreamed all this would happen, I sometimes still pinch myself, but God has really been kind. I’m so excited about my first film that I’ve read the script over 100 times. It’s my dream launch. I love chick flicks.
And as for being compared to Jolie — one of the sexiest women on the planet, that is a huge compliment.” How did Bollywood discover her? Producer Dhanesh Desai said, “For Hum Aap Aur Pyaar, we wanted to introduce a new girl. We spent six months casting but just couldn’t find a face that stood out in the crowd. We were holding an audition in Delhi. Just before it took place, we were having coffee in the lobby of a hotel and Esha walked in. We did a double take! I looked at my brother who looked at the director and we all smiled. We had found our leading lady. We then asked her to audition and, as they say, the rest is history.” Great going, certainly, but is there a Brad Pitt in Esha Gupta’s life as well? “I’m single for now,” the hottie said with a wink.
