GATE Overview : The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an All-India Examination conducted by the Seven IITs and IISC, Bangalore, on behalf of the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India.

The objectives of GATE is to identify meritorious and motivated candidates for admission to Post Graduate Programs in Engineering, Technology, Architecture and Pharmacy at the National level. Every year one IIT or IISc is selected as the Organizing Institute. To serve as benchmark for normalisation of the Undergraduate Engineering Education in the country.

What is GATE ?

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination administered and conducted in eight zones across the country by the GATE Committee comprising faculty from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordinating Board - GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India.

The GATE committee, which comprises of representatives from the administering institutes, is the sole authority for regulating the examination and declaring the results. GATE is conducted through the constitution of eight zones. The zones and the corresponding administrative institutes are :

Zone 1 - Indian Institute of Science Bangalore
Zone 2 - Indian Institute of Technology Delhi
Zone 3 - Indian Institute of Technology Bombay
Zone 4 - Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur
Zone 5 - Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati
Zone 6 - Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur
Zone 7 - Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee
Zone 8 - Indian Institute of Technology Madras

Admission to post graduate programs with MHRD and some other government scholarship / assistantship at engineering colleges / institutions in the country is open for those who are qualified through the GATE. The overall coordination and responsibility for conducting GATE 2009 lies with Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, designated as the Organizing Institute for GATE 2009.

To use the scholarship, the candidate must also ensure admission to such a Post Graduate program as per the current procedure for the admission procedure institution. In GATE 2009 examination papers will be of 3 hours duration and will contain 60 questions carrying capacity maximum of 100 marks.
